Amarnath Yatra: Rapidly melting lingam worries pilgrims

The size of the ice stalagmite at Amarnath Yatra is smaller than usual this year which has left many devotees disappointed. To make matter worse, the ice lingam has started to rapidly melt even as 40,000 pilgrims have already paid reverence to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath.

The naturally-formed ice stalagmite dedicated to Lord Shiva has been steadily reducing in size every year with climatologists blaming global warming as a reason behind the shrinking of the lingam. Ten years ago, the lingam stood at 20 feet but in May last year, its height was down to 18 feet. Surprisingly, the height ice lingam has fallen drastically to just 10 feet – the lowest recorded in over a decade.
