DOs and DON’Ts during Amarnath Yatra

Since the Amarnath pilgrimage takes the pilgrim to the unfamiliar territory of rocky cliffs, low oxygen weather, and unpredictable climate it is advised to follow certain rules and regulations before and during the pilgrimage. Below there are few traveling tips and guide for the pilgrims to follow in order to take special care during the Amarnath Yatra.

Things to Do during Amarnath Yatra

  1. Prepare for the Yatra by achieving a high level of Physical Fitness. You are advised to start at atleast a month prior to the Yatra at least a 4-5km morning or evening walk. For improving the oxygen efficiency of your body, you should start doing deep breathing exercises and Yoga, particularly Pranayam.
  2. As the pilgrimage will take the pilgrim amidst the cold weather at high altitude, it is advised to carry adequate woolen clothing, a small umbrella, raincoat, trekking shoes, torch, walking stick, woolen cap, jacket and socks. These items are essential as the climate is highly unpredictable and changes abruptly from sunny weather to rain and snow.
  3. For Ladies it is advised not to wear sari as it is not a suitable dress for the Yatra. Instead, Salwar Kameez, pant-shirt or a track suit will be better suited. Also, Ladies who are more than 6 week pregnant shall not be allowed to undertake the pilgrimage.
  4. Keeping in view the tough nature of the trek, children below 13 year in age and elderly persons above the age of 75 years shall not be permitted to undertake the pilgrimage.
  5. Carry aware bottle and some light snacks for the route like dry fruits, roasted grams, jiggery, toffees or chocolate in a water proof bag. Also carry some cold cream/Vaseline/sunscreen to protect your hands /face against sunburn etc.
  6. Always travel in a group and ensure that all those comprising the group, walking in front of you or in the rear, always remain in your sight, to ensure against your being separated from them.
  7. Earth, water, air, fire and sky are integral parts of Lord Shiva. Throughout your pilgrimage, it is advised that you must respect the environment and do nothing to pollute it.
  8. Carry the information of your group with you in case you get separated from that, Police can assist you with reuniting with your group. On your return journey, you must leave the Base Camp along with all members of your group. In case any member of your group is missing you must seek immediate assistance of the Police and also have an announcement made.
  9. Although medical facilities are available during the Yatra, a first aid is an essential.

  11. Always wear trekking shoes with laces and no slippers because there are steep rises and falls on the route to the Holy Cave.

  • Don’t attempt any short cuts on the route as doing so would be dangerous and could separate you from your group and the rest of the pilgrims.
