Amarnath Pilgrimage Route

High amidst the lofty mountains, Amarnath Cave is one the most visited holy shrine of Lord Shiva. Amarnath pilgrimage offers two routes to reach the revered Amarnath shrine which is situated at the elevation of 3,888 meters. The tradition Pahalgam route has been used for centuries which take almost 5 days to complete while the recently opened Baltal route offers quick visit to the Amarnath shrine and can be completed in a single day.      

There are two routes by which pilgrims can visit the holy cave of Amarnath.

ROUTE 1: Pahalgam – Amarnath Route

This is the traditional route of the Amarnath pilgrimage that has been followed by the pilgrims over the years. The distance between Jammu to Pahalgam can be covered by taxi or buses. These are available at Tourist Reception Centre J&K Govt, Raghunath Bazaar early in the morning. One can also reach Srinagar by air and then travel to Pahalgam by road.

Traditional Route: Jammu – Patnitop – Anantnag – Pahalgam – Chandanwari – Pissu Top – Sheshnag – Panchtarni – Amarnath Holy Cave
Other Route: Srinagar (by flight) – Anantnag – Pahalgam – Chandanwari – Pissu Top – Sheshnag – Panchtarni – Amarnath Holy Cave

ROUTE 2: Baltal – Amarnath Route

This route much shorter to the tradition Pahalgam route that pilgrims undertake for Amarnath Yatra as it allows pilgrims to take a round trip in 1-2 days. Young and healthy people looking for adventure amidst the religious trip happen to take this route as it is more difficult to trek uphill with limited facilities and food stalls.

Route: Srinagar – Sonmarg – Baltal – Domali – Barari Marg – Sangam – Holy Amarnath Cave
